The short answer: dust blowing out of your vents usually means dust has built up inside the ducts, the return side is pulling in dirty air, or the filter is not sealing. The vent is where you see it. The source is further back.
Check These First
Is the filter the right size, and does it sit tight in its slot? A gap lets air skip the filter. Is the return grille dirty? The return pulls air into the system, so dirt there heads straight to the coil and blower. Did the dust start after work in the house, like a remodel or new flooring?
Why It Keeps Coming Back
Wiping the vent cover fixes what you can see. The buildup inside the duct keeps feeding it. When the AC kicks on, airflow knocks loose dust off the duct walls and pushes it out.
When the Ducts Need Cleaning
- Dust blows out right after the system starts.
- The same vents get dirty again within a week.
- You see dark streaks on the ceiling around supply vents.
- There is a musty smell when the AC runs.
Want to check your own system first? Our supply register checks walk you through it, and signs your ducts and vents are dirty covers the other warning signs.
What a Real Fix Looks Like
A camera inspection shows what is inside. A full duct cleaning uses negative air and source removal on every supply and return line, plus the coil and blower wheel. It takes 8 to 10 hours per system. If the problem is limited to the registers and the runs behind them, HVAC vent cleaning may be the right starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is dust from vents a filter problem?
Sometimes. Check the fit first. If dust keeps coming back with a good filter, the ducts are the source.
Can I clean my ducts myself?
You can clean vent covers. The buildup inside needs negative air equipment.
How long does duct cleaning take?
8 to 10 hours per system.
