TL;DR

Routine, coupon-driven duct cleaning is often unnecessary and sometimes dishonest. That does not mean HVAC contamination should be ignored.

Humid climates create ideal conditions for microbial growth inside coils, drain pans, blowers, ductboard, and insulation. Those contaminated surfaces can release spores and debris into the air moving through the home.

The right approach starts with a detailed inspection by qualified professionals. Clean what is contaminated, replace what cannot be cleaned, correct the moisture source, and leave harmless dust alone.

Every few years, a major outlet runs some version of the same story: “Is duct cleaning a scam?” The latest answers echo what official guidance and research have said for a long time, that routine, coupon‑driven duct cleaning in an otherwise normal house rarely produces measurable improvements in day‑to‑day air quality, and that the industry is riddled with bait‑and‑switch tactics and superficial work.

On those narrow points, I agree.

What I don’t agree with is the leap from “routine duct cleaning has limited measurable benefit” to “HVAC system hygiene is unnecessary,” especially in humid climates where microbial contamination inside the HVAC is not a hypothetical, it’s an epidemic nobody wants to talk about.

In the Southeast and other high‑humidity regions, we ask our HVAC systems to do something very difficult: run cold coils through warm, moist air, push that air across porous materials, and cycle on and off while surfaces repeatedly get wet and dry. That is, by definition, a recipe for microbial growth. Fungi, bacteria, and their byproducts do what they always do when they find moisture, nutrients, and surface area: they colonize.

What the studies and inspections consistently show is that coils, drip pans, filters, ductboard, and internal insulation can become quiet reservoirs of microbial buildup. Under the wrong conditions, those reservoirs don’t just sit there, they shed spores and fragments into the airstream. In other words, the system intended to improve comfort and air quality can become the very vehicle that distributes contamination deeper into the home.

That’s a very different conversation than, “Is there a thin film of dust on the metal duct, and does removing it change your particle count by 10 percent?”

There’s also a structural licensing and incentive problem that almost guarantees we won’t address it. What do I mean by that?

Typical HVAC contractors are experts in mechanical function, comfort, and energy efficiency. They are often not trained, equipped, or frankly eager to start talking about a certain four letter word that rhymes with old, or mycotoxins, and biotoxins inside the equipment they install and service. 

On the other side, mold and microbial remediation contractors may be very tuned into contamination, but in many states they are not licensed to open air handlers, coils, or certain duct systems. They are literally barred from touching the very heart of the air‑delivery system. 

The result is a blind spot big enough to drive a truck through: whole remediation projects where surfaces are wiped, walls are treated, contents are cleaned, and the HVAC system, with its biofilm‑coated coil, slimy pan, and saturated ductboard, is left almost entirely uninspected and untreated. When those jobs fail and symptoms return, it’s not always because somebody “didn’t clean well enough.” It’s often because nobody was allowed, or willing, to clean the part of the building that moves all the air. And most likely the most contaminated part of the home.

So when we call duct cleaning “unnecessary” or “kind of a scam” without even acknowledging this dynamic, we’re comforting people with an answer that’s technically tidy but practically incomplete. It’s like judging kitchen hygiene by looking at the countertop and ignoring the fact that the plates haven’t been washed in months.

That’s where I think we need a more honest middle position.

First, we should absolutely be skeptical of drive‑by duct cleaning: the $99 whole‑house coupon, the quick vacuum at a few registers, the scare tactics about “toxic black mold” designed to turn a cheap special into a thousand‑dollar upsell. Those practices deserve every bit of criticism they get. And in some states are going against the law and those that do this should be reported. No license should equal jail time. 

Second, we should be just as skeptical of blanket claims that “duct cleaning is useless,” delivered as if every system in every climate is a lightly dusty metal trunk line. In humid regions, and in homes with documented moisture or mold issues, the question is not “Does a thin layer of dust on smooth metal matter?” The question is “What is actually growing on the surfaces that my conditioned air touches, and how far has that contamination penetrated?”

The answer to that question does not come from a coupon. It comes from a deep‑dive.

A responsible approach starts with inspection and documentation: opening the air handler, looking at the coil and blower, evaluating pans and drains, checking duct materials, especially ductboard and internal insulation, for staining, slime, or growth, and correlating what we see with odors and building history. 

Sometimes that inspection confirms what the national articles say: the system is mechanically sound, relatively clean, and the best investment is filtration upgrades, moisture control, and a good tune‑up.

But sometimes it shows something else: ducts that function more like dirty plates than clean utensils, filters that became wet microbial sponges after a humidification or condensate event, insulation that has clearly become a living substrate. In those cases, ignoring what we see because “the EPA doesn’t recommend routine duct cleaning” is not caution, it’s denial and frankly, irresponsible.

That’s where my food–water–air frame comes in. We already accept that dishes should be washed and pipes kept clean even if we can’t track the health impact of every single wash. Food, water, and air are the three main exposure highways into the body. The HVAC system is the highway for your air. Once contamination on that highway crosses a certain line, visible growth, recurrent odors, documented reservoirs, it’s no longer a question of selling a cosmetic cleaning. It’s a question of basic hygiene. You can always replace it all. Usually the best answer. But it’s not always feasible or even an option when the ducts are behind walls.

Duct cleaning, in that context, is not a miracle cure. It is one tool inside a broader concept of HVAC system hygiene: cleaning or replacing contaminated components, correcting moisture problems, ensuring proper filtration, and sometimes judiciously deciding that certain materials have to go. It should not be routine for every home. It should absolutely not be dismissed as a scam everywhere, either.

What we need is a more nuanced message: don’t buy air‑duct cleaning as a once‑a‑year magic bullet. Do insist that, in humid states and in any building with a history of moisture or mold, the system that delivers your air is inspected with the same seriousness you’d give to the systems that deliver your food and water. See what’s actually there. Then clean what truly needs to be cleaned, replace what truly needs to be replaced, and leave alone what truly is just a little dusty and benign. Start with a licensed HVAC company that is NADCA certified. IAQ Knowledge or experience is a massive plus. Mold License on top of all this is the real differentiator. 

If we can move the conversation from “Is duct cleaning a scam?” to “How do we handle HVAC contamination honestly?” we might finally start addressing the epidemic that’s been hiding in plain sight, flowing through our vents one breath at a time.
